1) Don’t put jewelry and cosmetic together. In case the finger ring is tainted by cosmetic, its luster will die away; in particular, the diamond, which is apt to be stuck by oily cosmetic, thus it must be separated from such cosmetic.
2) Don’t wear jewelry while washing clothes or bathing. Pearl is sensitive to corrosive acid substances, and should not be exposed to detergent.
3) Don’t wear jewelry in the environment of chemical gas and polluting condition. For example, all jewelries are deteriorated by sulfur. The emerald is deteriorated by pesticide and other sprays.
4) Don’t wear jewelry while sporting or doing rough work. For example, the sweat contains fatty acid, urea and like substances that cause corrosive effect to the pearl, for this reason, it’s said that “pearl with the origin in the south of the five ridges is dressed in the north”. North China features cold weather and less sweat, thus it’s suitable for wearing pearl.
5) Don’t put multiple jewelries together. For example, hard diamond can easily scratch other gemstones. thus, hard diamond and other gemstones should be sealed and stored separately after use.
6) Don’t put gold and mercury together for fear of dissolution.
7) Don’t put jewelry and drugs together. Some drugs chemically react with the jewelry, and cause discolor and deterioration.
8) Don’t wash jewelry with water. Pearl, turquoise, cat’s eye, coral, amber and like jewelry are water-absorbing, thus washing with water could result in cracking.
9) Don’t put the jewelry under high temperature condition. Some jewelries are susceptible to high temperature, or crack when washing with water, or discolor, for example, cat’s eye is susceptible to heat, surface wax of jade will dissolve when exposed to more than 55° heat, leading to loss of protective effect and degraded sheen.
10) Don’t shock the jewelry intensively. Although many jewelries set with gemstones are designed with robust base, intensive shock should be the avoided as possible. In other words, before start of striking and shocking, take off the jewelry.
Don’t clean your ring with abrasive products: Toothpaste, baking soda, or any powdered cleaners can scratch metals, particularly gold.
Don’t put your ring through needless wear and tear: It is best to take your jewelry off while playing sports or working out, any activity that involves impact on your hands (from volleyball to rock climbing, weight lifting and even gardening can bend or break the prongs that hold your stone in place in rings. Even sleeping takes its toll on jewelry. Rings are ok, but never wear your bracelets or chains while you are sleeping. The movement that we do while sleeping puts unwanted stress on the items.
